Last weekend at the Sydney University Aquatic Centre, the Australian Open Karate Championship attracted 397 fighters, an Australian record. The attraction was that for the first time Australia was sending fully sponsored team to the 2015 European Championships in Sweden. Making the team was one of the great attractions and subsequently the record breaking number of fighters.
The Bondi Junction Kyokushin karate school's Chief Instructor 9th Dan John Taylor, felt that, with so many talented fighters in the his school, they had a great chance to gain some spots on the team and put in very strong female team including the current World Champion Ysobel Jarjoura.
With such a prize available the fighting very intense in all divisions. It was nail biting stuff when it came down to the last two fighters in each division with Bondi Junction School having a fighter in each female final.

Shihan Edward "Bobby" Lowe, RIP |

Shihan Bobby Lowe, [23-Aug-1929 to 14-Sep-2011](IKO International Committee Chairman, North & Central American Chairman, USA Branch Chief, 8th dan in the Kyokushinkaikan) passed away on Wednesday evening in Honolulu, Hawaii. Shihan Lowe was the first live in student (uchi deshi) of Sosai Masutatsu Oyama, founder of Kyokushin karate. He then opened the first Kyokushin Dojo outside of Japan in Hawaii in 1957. He visited Australia many times to attend the AKKA National Tournaments and will be sadly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, and children, Barbara and Mike.

Queensland Kyokushin Karate pioneer Frank "Frankie" Everett passed away in his gym on Sat 20-Aug-2011. Amongst his original students were Shihan Tony Bowden and Sensei Steve Hardy. We wish to convey our condolences to his family and friends. He will be sadly missed. |
